Absolutely unbelievable was the confirmation that came just days later in a press release headlined, "Microsoft and Bungie Studios to evolve relationship." Similarly unexpected was the source of the rumors, a reader blog on the website of the Seattle Post-Intelligence claiming that the author heard the buzz second-hand from a friend with ties to someone at Bungie. What was unexpected were the rumors that Halo developer Bungie, a studio Microsoft acquired in 2000, was somehow going to split off from its parent company and return to independent game development.

Whatever this secret may be, fans will get their chance to find out when The Game Awards 2021 is held in LA’s Microsoft Theater on December 9.The games industry moves pretty fast, and there's a tendency for all involved to look constantly to what's next without so much worrying about what came before. It isn’t clear if Michael Gamble’s teased reveal about Mass Effect 4 is a new plot detail or some kind of behind-the-scenes secret about last year’s teaser trailer itself, but there is a solid chance of it winning “Favorite Moment of 2020” at The Game Awards 2021 - especially if it means voters will get to discover a hidden tidbit behind the next installment of the beloved Mass Effect saga. Meanwhile, Geoff Keighley has teased the inclusion of 40 to 50 games at the Game Awards this year. Ultimate’s chilling reveal of Final Fantasy VII baddie Sephiroth as a DLC guest character and a handful of musical performances from Persona 5 Strikers’ Lyn Inaizumi, the London Philharmonic Orchestra, and Eddie Vedder. Moments that are competing with the Mass Effect reveal trailer include Super Smash Bros. The “Favorite Moment of 2020” award will be a special category separate from the usual batch of honors being handed out at The Game Awards 2021 event, featuring the most talked about trailers and segments from last year’s gaming awards extravaganza. Gamble noted how much the team at BioWare enjoyed the reveal of the teaser, and even though voting for that category has been closed as of the time of this writing, he also cryptically promised to reveal one secret about the Mass Effect 4 trailer should it win at The Game Awards. On the more technical side of things, a job posting by BioWare in September suggested that Mass Effect 4 is being built with Unreal Engine 4 instead of EA’s in-house Frostbite Engine - although this hasn’t been officially confirmed yet. In the months since the Mass Effect 4 trailer’s first showing at The Game Awards 2020 livestream last December, fans have been speculating on whether or not the new game will address the events of 2017’s divisive Mass Effect Andromeda or feature the unlikely return of original Mass Effect trilogy hero Commander Shepard.
Very little is currently known about the plot of this new Mass Effect game, except that fan-favorite squadmate Liara T’Soni could have a supporting role.

BioWare unveiled a brief teaser for the long-awaited next installment of its sprawling sci-fi RPG series late last year, marking Mass Effect’s return after nearly four years of dormancy.
